dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of asthma on the degree of apical root resorption in orthodontically treated patients. To this end, were selected a sample of 683 patients from of the Specialization Coursein Orthodontics ,Faculty Inga, Bauru unit, patients presenting with asthma and without systemic problems (control group), all orthodontic treatment and orthodontic documentation complete. The sample consisted of 240 patients with asthma and 443 who didn’t have any kind of allergy or asthma (control group). Were used the score Levander & Malmgren to assess the degree of root resorption, which showed up as follows: grade 0 (no degree of root resorption), grade 1 (irregular contour of the root), grade 2 (apical root resorption less than2 mm), grade 3 (root resorption between 2mm and apical third of the root original length) and grade 4 (resorption exceeds the apical third of the root original length). The analysis was performed on periapical radiographs of the upper and lower incisors, beginning and end of all the patients. So, it was divided as follows: group 1 (with 614 patients who had mild resorption with scores of 0,1 and 2 Levander & Malmgren) with initial age of 14,37 years old, final age of 16,44 years old and treatment time of 2,07 years , group 2 (69 patients who had moderate to severe root resorption with scores 3 and 4 Levander & Malmgren) with initial age of 15,09 years old, final age of 17,81 years old and treatment time of 2,72 years. The results showed that asthma was not a statistically significant factor for the severe root resorption. The group with severe root resorption presented greater initial and final ages and treatment time than the group with slight resorption. Besides, dental extractions is a risk for the occurrence of severe root resorption. pt_BR
