Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compare the amount of root resorption after alignment between the edgewise straight wire (group 1) and the self-ligating (group 2) appliance systems. Periapical radiographs were obtained for the maxillary incisors from 54 patients, 33 in group 1 and 21 in group 2 after alignment. The two groups were matched according to initial and final mean ages, alignment time, gender distribution and treatment protocol. Root resorption was evaluated according to a score system. The data regarding root resorption were compared with the Mann Whitney non parametric test. Results demonstrated that there is no significant difference in root resorption between the two groups. Similar degrees of root resorption can be expected after alignment with the edgewise straight wire and the self-ligating appliance systems.
