dc.description.abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the use of topical anesthesia for insertion of mini-implants used as a means of skeletal anchorage in orthodontics. The 20% base Lidocaine topical anesthetic gel was used for insertion of mini-implants in three different times of action of the anesthetic, being 3 minutes of action, 5 minutes and 7 minutes, termed as groups. A sample of 30 patients was set for the execution of each time of the anesthetic. Patients answered a pre and post-surgical questionnaire with four multiple choice questions each, assessing the acceptability and discomfort during placement of mini-implants with the use of topical anesthetic. The data was evaluated by t paired test to evaluate the difference between the mean average age of each group, the chi-square test for the evaluation of questionnaire responses, the Mann-Whitney test for the evaluation of analogue scale of VAS and Logistic Regression Analysis to quantify pain sensitivity between the times of contact of the anesthetic. The time of three minutes was inefficient to carry out this research, requiring the exclusion of that time due to great discomfort during the application of the mini-implant, so the research was conducted with a time of seven minutes, this work termed as Group 1 (G1) and five minutes termed as Group 2 (G2). The average age of patients observed in G1 was 26.87 years and 31.08 years for G2. These values were not significantly different by the t test, so it could be said that age is similar in both groups. The pre surgical questionnaire responses showed that no significant differences existed by the Chi-Square test, however in the post-surgical questionnaire responses, significant differences were observed by the test for questions 2 and 4 showing greater acceptance of G1 (anesthetic usage for 7 minutes) for installation of mini-implant. In the scale of VAS analogue scale, times did not differ statistically in terms of pain sensation, however in general it was observed that the time of seven minutes is the most effective for the use of 20% base Lidocaine topical anesthetic in installation of mini-implants and that the Group 1 has 9.7614 more chances not to feel pain when compared with Group 2. pt_BR
