ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to evaluate the attractiveness of different gingival
smile on zeniths by laypeople, dentists and orthodontists. Five posed
photographs of 5 patients were taken in a standardized manner. Each photo
was digitally manipulated in Keynote software in the gingival zenith region in
increments of 0.5 to 1 mm in maxillary central and lateral incisors
symmetrically and asymmetrically, in 9 different ways for each photo.
Subsequently were placed on a website, so evaluators could observe them
and vote according to their esthetic perception from 1 to 10, 1 being the least
attractive and 10 the more attractive. The entire database was stored and
available to the researcher. Data were collected and to compare the changes
of smiles among laypeople, dentists and orthodontists, the Kruskal-Wallis test
was used for comparison and each smile change between younger and older
groups it was used the Mann-Whitney test. It was found that the results for the
laypeople, asymmetric changes from 1mm in maxillary central incisor were
more significant than the lateral incisors. In general, dentists and orthodontists
were more critical in evaluating and perceiving the changes of the gingival
zenith and zenith changes greater than 1mm were noted in the attractiveness
of the smile, both by laypeople, dentists and orthodontists.
