The aim of this study was to compare the amount of gingival recession caused during
orthodontic treatment between two groups of Class III patients treated with two
diferente pre-set brackets prescription Roth and Biofunctional. 64 patients with Class
III malocclusion, both genders, with complete permanent dentition up to first molars,
treated without extractions and with intermaxillary Class III elastics were selected, 30
for group 1 and 34 for group 2. Gingival recession was measured in millimeters on
intraoral photographs (frontal view) in two stages, at the beginning (T1) and at end
(T2) of orthodontic treatment. The transformation to the real value was done by a
simple rule of three using the width of the tooth 21 measured on initial study casts.
The behavior of gingival recession during orthodontic treatment was evaluated in a
stage called T2-T1. Furthermore, it was assessed facial pattern (FMA), severity of
malocclusion (Wits) and mandibular incisor inclination (1.NB and IMPA) on lateral
cephalograms at T1, T2 and T1-T2, while the amount of crowding was measured on
the initial models with Little irregularity Index and data relating to age and treatment
time were obtained from patient’s files. The comparison of the results of gingival
recession measurements between the two groups was made with independent “t test
at T1, T2 and T1-T2. To assess whether any of the cephalometric variables or the
mandibular anterior crowding or the initial age and overall treatment time were
correlated with gingival recession in T1 and T2-T1,the Pearson correlation test was
used, to assess the if molar relationship severity influenced gingival recession, the
nonparametric Spearman correlation test was used. The results showed no
statistically significant difference between the amount of gingival recession generated
by orthodontic treatment between groups 1 and 2. Furthermore, no correlation was
found between any of the other factors analyzed and the behavior of gingival
recession, except for the initial age and the amount of gingival recession in T1. |
