Abstract:
A large percentage of the current Brazilian elderly population is a user of dentures, or need to use
them. Therefore, this study was developed with the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of
methods, hygiene in the removal of fungi on the surface of dentures, upper and lower 45 days in
masticatory function. The sample consisted of forty total edentulous volunteers, who were invited to
participate in the study. The volunteers were divided into four groups, with group 1 received no oral
hygiene orientation upon delivery of the denture, group 2 received verbal guidance oral hygiene at
delivery of the prosthesis and group 3 received beyond verbal orientation oral hygiene, a leaflet
containing the same guidelines explained verbally and group 4 received the leaflet a soft toothbrush
and verbal orientation. A simple count of CFUs (colony forming units) of each group was analyzed
using analysis of variance (ANOVA), with significance level of 5%. There was no statistically
significant difference between the samples collected in the first week compared with the second
collection, 45 days after installation for groups 1 and 2. In groups 3 and 4 there was a significant
reduction (p <0.05) the number of CFUs, these results demonstrated that the relationship between
received orientation and free have a follow-up of oral hygiene. It can be concluded that the
orientation program yielded positive results and can be used to improve the standard of oral hygiene
of patients with dentures
